About me

I am Daan Wielens (30). I'm a researcher in the Quantum Transport in Matter (QTM) / Interfaces and Correlated Electron systems (ICE) group at the University of Twente (Enschede, The Netherlands).

I enjoy sporting (speed skating, inline skating, cycling, mountain biking, running and fitness), am active in various sports-related boards and I like playing and performing in/with my band Headline.

Experience

2020 - nowResearcher
University of Twente, Enschede

As researcher I focus on magnetic topological insulators that are deposited by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). In addition, I bring technical support to the research groups, where I focus on the MBE and on cryogenic measurement equipment, such as dilution refrigerators. Check out my personal page.

2017 - 2021PhD Student
University of Twente, Enschede

In my research I grow thin films of Topological Insulators (TIs) by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). These films are then structured and characterised on structural properties (XRR, XRD, XPS, AFM, SEM) and on their transport properties.

2015 - 2017Student assistant
University of Twente, Enschede (Part time)

As a student assistant, I have assisted during working classes and practicals that are given to first, second and third year bachelor students. I have given small introductory presentations, answered questions from students, prepared setups in the lab and I have graded the assignments.

2016MSc Internship
Bosch Thermotechnology, Deventer

The assignment was ‘User profiling: Big Data analyses on EMS data and Smart Meter data’. I have created a framework to convert, preprocess and analyze the datasets. I have also started collaborations with other departments within Bosch in order to share and use the data for other processes.

2008 - 2017Executive refill manager
Jumbo Leussink, Haaksbergen (Part time)

As executive refill manager, I supply colleagues with work, answer their questions and check if everyone does what he has to do within the given time. Over the years, I learned to work at every department of the store, which gave me a lot of insight about the structure of typical retail company.

2014 - 2015Accountant
Jumbo Leussink, Haaksbergen (Part time)

I have optimized various payroll administration documents that are written in Microsoft Excel. I have automated multiple parts (input, output, queries) in order to be able to perform the same set of tasks in 30% of the time that was needed before.

2014Research case
University of Twente, Enschede (160 hours)

For the Study Tour case, I have conducted several tasks at the research group Industrial Focus Group XUV Optics. I have replicated the controller computer of the ADC multilayer coating machine. I have also written a MATLAB program that has analyzed hundreds of gigabytes of measurement data.
